Recently, some politicians and media personalities in the United States have made an accusation that Chinese government has begun a project to rewrite Christianity. In the Christian theology, Jesus is the son of God and lived sin free life. However, according to the accusations made by the American politicians and media, China has revised the Book of John in which Jesus makes a declaration: “I am also a sinner” before casting a stone on an adulteress woman.
I investigated this allegation made by the United States and found no merit in these accusations against the Chinese.
I conducted a search on the largest Chinese language search engine, Baidu (which results are controlled by the authorities), with the key words “Jesus” and “sinless” in the Chinese language, and I received thousands of search results to linked Chinese language articles stating that Jesus did indeed live a sin free life.
All Christians are truth seekers, and it is fundamental for Christians to prioritize logic over emotion. It is important for Christians to recognize that some American media broadcasts about China, which are seen in the United States, may be politically biased, based on unfounded accusations, or taken out of context. Additionally, the language barrier can contribute to confusion and difficulty in understanding the specific context of a story.
Christians should be aware that in the current geopolitical tensions between China and the United States, religion can be manipulated for ulterior political motives. Therefore, Christians should be cautious of jumping to conclusions about China.
China is a wonderful country with a fantastic people who are open to accepting Christianity, and Christianity can align with the cultural worldview of China. Christians, operating within the framework of Chinese law, should be allowed to share the gospel in China. However, if the U.S. continues to push baseless accusations against China for political purposes, many of which can be easily proven false, it may alienate the Chinese population and push them away from the gospel. Consequently, Christians should condemn the actions of certain politicians from the United States.
